What Rainbow Reminds Us?

And God said: “This is the sign of the covenant which I make between Me and you, and every living creature that is with you, for perpetual generations. I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. – Genesis 9:12-13, NKJV

My eldest brother, Randy, and his family migrated to Australia last April 6, 2008. On our route to the airport, it was a little cloudy and tiny raindrops started falling. My niece, Gabrielle Anne said, “I will ask God to send rainbow”. We asked why? She said, “So I will be happy”. Perhaps she’s starting to be sad knowing she will leave her cousins and best buds, Luke Caleb* and Renz Kenneth* behind.

That moment left several questions in my mind. What makes Gabby think she will be happy with a rainbow? Where did the rainbow came from? Why for some reason, the rain stops when a rainbow is visible? Well, science and scientists tried their best to find out. In fact, they have a scientific explanation to that. To me, it is enough to know that we have a great God who is in complete control over all His creation. Everything He created is an amazement to me.

The following morning, I was reading the Bible. And at the course of my study I was led to Genesis 9. Where my question, “Where did the rainbow came from?” was answered. God set the rainbow as a sign of His covenant with Noah and his sons and all descendants after him. A covenant that God will never again send flood to destroy the earth and all flesh. God said, “I set My rainbow in the cloud, and it shall be for the sign of the covenant between Me and the earth. It shall be, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the rainbow shall be seen in the cloud; and I will remember My covenant which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh. The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” – Genesis 9:13-16, NKJV.

Amazing isn’t it? If you believe the Bible is the inspired Word of God, then you will believe Genesis 9:13, that God made the rainbow as a sign of His covenant to Noah and all his descendants. Should I say, every single person on earth? If you don’t believe any of this, then perhaps, God has blinded your heart from this truth. Some of you may ask, if this is true, then why do we still hear some disastrous flood that claimed innocent lives? My answer to that is, God is sovereign. He is faithful to His covenant and promises. But still He allows things to happen beyond human comprehension. Well, this is another topic that I’m not going to deal with on this article.

Danielle Alyanna singing \In the eyes of my little niece, rainbow will make her happy. Beyond her comprehension she understands that somehow seeing a rainbow in a cloudy day will make her happy; aside from singing the song – “Rain, Rain, Go Away”, which on the contrary her little sister, Danielle Alyanna* (see picture), was singing while en route to the airport. Gazing at that wonderful and amazing work of One True God is quite a happy feeling, specially when we know what is that rainbow for and what it reminds us of.

The rainbow shall be in the cloud, and I will look on it to remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth. – Genesis 9:16, NKJV
